EIP-4844 (March 13, 2024)

EIP-4844, known as Proto-Danksharding, is a significant upgrade within the Ethereum Cancun-Deneb upgrade, poised to dramatically enhance the scalability and efficiency of the Ethereum network, especially for Layer 2 rollup solutions. Scheduled to go live on March 13, 2024, this upgrade introduces an innovative type of transaction that incorporates large data fields, or “blobs”, about 125 kB each. These blobs allow for more efficient data processing at reduced costs compared to traditional methods on Ethereum.

Proto-Danksharding aims to significantly reduce gas fees and increase transaction throughput by utilizing blob-carrying transactions. These transactions, which act like sidecars to Ethereum transactions, include large yet inexpensive-to-process pieces of information. By temporarily storing these blobs on the Ethereum consensus layer, the upgrade seeks to drastically lower the cost of data from rollups to the Ethereum base layer, thereby reducing transaction fees.

As a critical component of Ethereum’s vision for a scalable and efficient network, EIP-4844 lays the groundwork for the full implementation of Danksharding in the future. The upgrade includes not just blob-carrying transactions but also execution-layer logic, verification rules, and a multidimensional fee market, all of which are steps toward making Ethereum fully scalable.

The technical specifications of EIP-4844 are designed to ensure compatibility and efficiency in data handling, with blobs stored on the consensus layer and inaccessible from the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This setup paves the way for a smoother and less complex transition to full sharding in the future for developers.

The Cancun-Deneb upgrade, encompassing EIP-4844, is expected to deliver not only scalability improvements and gas fee reductions but also security enhancements, optimized data storage, and advancements in cross-chain interactions. These enhancements contribute to a more robust, adaptable, and user-friendly blockchain ecosystem.

This upgrade underlines Ethereum’s ongoing commitment to innovation, aiming to cement its position as a leading platform for decentralized applications and smart contracts by making transactions more cost-effective and efficient for both users and developers.
